Somatic Coaching with The APEX Model

Joanna Harper, MSc

My clients have discovered that their Heart Goals differ significantly from their SMART (specific, measured, achievable, realistic, time-bound) goals. Another approach is essential if setting an ambitious goal has ever felt like overwhelming pressure or a long, unachievable to-do list for you or your coaching clients. Most traditional coaching frameworks and models prioritise outcomes generated by the thinking, rational mind.

Standard coaching models and techniques are not always robust or flexible enough for all clients or circumstances. Alternative blended and integrated approaches are vital for those who do not know what they want and cannot set an achievable goal or outcome for a coaching session and beyond. These are people who are struggling with life challenges and cannot yet even imagine what else may be possible. By contrast, other clients want to change their whole lives and personalities in an hour. Approaching both with linear models and frameworks will not be effective for these clients.

Over the years, my free-flow coaching approach has evolved. Beyond utilising traditional methods, coaching models and goal-setting strategies. I blend in elements…

Introducing The APEX Model

Joanna’s APEX model offers an integrative, somatic coaching approach. Coaching with all the elements of APEX – often reveals to the client overlooked, disregarded or forgotten dreams and aspirations that are currently outside their conscious awareness.

Joanna first introduced Coaches to her APEX Model in her book The Trauma-Informed Coach: Strategies to Support Clients When Their Past Prevents Progress. APEX a flexible model that coaches and clients can widely use—its application is not limited to trauma-informed coaching.

The chapter in Coaching Reimagined shows Coaches a range of ways to apply the APEX Model, with two case studies to demonstrate it in workplace Coaching sessions.
